In some cases there are suggestions for name variations but if you still can’t find someone that you think might be associated with the Township of Altrincham during the time of the 1852 Survey, then try typing just a few letters or else just their first name.
Even if they were living or working in the Township of Altrincham outside the time of the 1852 Survey, by working methodically with their names or those of their neighbours and the locations in other sources, such as the Census, Street Directories and maps, the related 1852 Plot can usually be worked out. This could be for the period either before or well after 1852, as many of the houses, “cottages” (small terraced houses) and other buildings and their footprints, remained mostly unchanged until the 1960s.

Notes on the Transcription
The Plot numbers of the handwritten ‘Altrincham Survey. Book of Reference. 1852.’ (ALT/9/1/4/1), refer to the 15 original watercolour and ink Sheets of the ‘Detail Plans of the Township of Altrincham Surveyed for the Purposes of The Local Board of Health 1852’ (ALT/9/1/1/1). Both are held by Trafford Local Studies Centre in Sale, Cheshire. A team of 14 dedicated volunteers have transcribed the entries from photocopies, which were then triple-checked and standardised, as well as compared to the original document. Most of the transcribers were new to the art, so learnt a skill during the process.
In order to present the entries in a meaningful way for searching, being shown individually or sorted, a semi-diplomatic style of transcribing has been used. This means for example, that where names or information are repeated and shown in the next row of the original as “The same” or “Ditto”, in the transcription they are repeated in full.
In the “Quantities” column, many of the Plots form part of a larger parcel of land, so the phrase [Part of] has been inserted in front of the total amount for each individual Plot.
Occasionally there are strike-outs in the original which are replicated but with the correction shown as being in a [later hand].
Where occasional “Remarks” are made in the last column and grouped together by a large bracket, the information is put in square brackets for each individual Plot.
Although other sources such as Street Directories or the Census may sometimes have slight variations in spelling to that of the ‘Altrincham Survey’, wherever the name is clearly written, it has been transcribed as seen. However, to aid searching, abbreviations such as “Jas” becomes James or “Saml” becomes Samuel.
